Domaine Glantenay Pommard les Saussilles 2009

Despite the alcoholic warmth, this feels like winter. . . Deep and dark, shadowy. . . game and blood. . . a scary all alone in the forest type of pinot. . . I’m not completely convinced, it feels too cold and stern.

After a series of skinny, bordering on anorexic wines, something close to normal weight and shape. Pale for an Aussie pinot; raspberry and creaming soda, then the sticks and stones and curry leaf. . . Bold, chiseled flesh; quite delicious, the illusion of softness and folds, but in reality it’s quite firm and athletic.

Two Tonne Tasmania Ziggurat Pinot noir 2016

Pinot noir co-fermented with riesling and gewürztraminer skins. I can smell and feel the trainer, but not the riesling. . . it’s a curious wine, mostly pinot, but clearly enhanced, it’s almost, but not quite a fembot. . .

Pale and very fragrant; musk, strawberries, flint and spice. Flesh and perfume in the mouth – very polished and with more zip and oomph than you might expect. Yes.

Bass Phillip 21 Pinot noir

An old school treat. . . the colour turning and the nose and palate complex and idiosyncratic. Smouldering and savoury. Unwashed. Ham, aniseed, roots – ginseng perhaps. Earthy. . . Juicy and pert but never far away the shadows and the impression of something wild and animalistic. Super.

Domaine Rapet Beaune Les Bressandes 2010

A modest mid week tipple to drown my sorrows. . . I spent the morning observing the US election count. . . hopeful and expectant at first, then confusion followed by disbelief. What just happened. . . Another reminder (Brexit was the first for 2016) not to place too much weight on predictions (the night before Nate Silver suggested there was a 71% chance of a Clinton victory) – it leaves you open to danger and disappointment. For someone who had hoped manners and reason would prevail, it feels like a kick to the goolies.

Quite a simple wine – it leads with strawberries and petals, but later more earth and undergrowth. Grip and meat in the mouth – firmer and harder than expected. . . On another day I’m sure I would find more charm.

Much better than my last encounter, though I suspect the change is in observer rather than the wine. . . It seems dangerously easy and ready; complete. A complicated nose – stewed fruit, brooding, bloody and smoked, game and hide, mercaptan maybe. . . Lush, rich and maturing – toothsome and savoury – meat, great acids; slippery. Yes. A-/A
